The waterproof tubular canister contains a flare at one end and a smoke signal on the other end. This signal is packaged in all life rafts aboard Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) aircraft and is also frequently carried by aircrews, soldiers in wilderness environments, and sailors deployed at sea is a buoyant smoke signal for use in rescue situations at sea.
